Transnational blogs project blog created!

Upcoming project: Transnational corporations blogs simulation on Kenneth blogs: The transnational blogs project

Hi everyone
In geography, one would consider the topic on transnational corporations, their structure and their impacts.
To simulate the structure of transnational corporations and let blog viewers get a sense of the operations of transnational corporations, we are going to do it blog-scale. Under the transnational blogs project, we are going to simulate the structure and operations of a transnational corporation through the creation of the following blogs:
Proposed:
1) Transnational blogs project blog
2) Central command blog
3) Regional command and promotion blogs(maybe)
4) Connection blog between blogs-Link blog operations (completed)
5) Research and development via ideas blog (Completed)

Map Reading skils

This is a post on the ways that one can intepret a map.

There are several important features that one must consider upon looking at a map.

1) Scale
If a map shows 1:25000, it means 1cm is to 25000cm, which means that 1cm on the map covers an actual distance of 25000/100=250m on actual scale. This is important especially to gauge average travelling time between two places indicated on a map.

2) Roads
Are there roads connected to a particular area? Not only does this tell me if people can drive there, but it also shows me the human activities going on in the area. If there are many roads leading to and from the area, especially if they are highways or expressways, then we can infer that the area has a high volume of economic activity. Also keep a look out for traffic junctions, towns and other aspects of the area to further conclude the type of economic activity in the area.

3) Vegetation
Check the map for farms and nature reserves. Are the farms located near the town areas or along major roads? Are there also several crop processing factories or plants nearby? If the answer is yes, then it is likely that the area is a major agricultural area.

4) Facilities
The types of facilities you should be looking for to discern the economic activities of an area are:
-Schools (Education)
-Hospitals and clinics (Level of healthcare)
-Housing(Densely or sparsely populated?)
-Hotels and resorts(Tourism)
-Factories(Manufacturing and industrialisation)
-Shopping centers (Shopping and tertiary services)
-Religious places(Religion)
-Swimming pools, gyms, running track(Sports facilities)
-Attractions for tourists(Tourism)

5) Water bodies and rivers
Check the map for rivers because rivers are a source of hydroelectric power(Through dams), means of transportation by boats, source of irrigation water. Reservoirs are areas for storage and mass distribution of clean water. Seas are possibly a means of transportation, check if the area on the map has ports and docks.

Why I like Geography

Why do I like geography? Simple answer:Map reading
Maps are informative and useful in many circumstances.
1) Maps help the tourist to find his way to a sightseeing spot or places or interests.
2) Maps shows us the boundaries of districts, counties, provinces, countries etc. Gives us an identity of who we are on earth(and in the universe for galaxial maps)
3) Maps can be shown with additional plastic inserts for GDP, population, forest cover etc. Particularly useful for companies who are exploring the area for good business opportunities.

Wait, there is more to Geography than that.
1) Geology
Tells us how the land we live in is formed over billions of years. Tells us what type of rock our land is made of-particularly useful for construction companies to determine if a site is suitable for long-term building construction.
2)Climate
Tells us the weather extremes of an area, local temperature and wind directions. Useful for tourists to determine if they need to wear sweaters, jackets, winter clothing or simply T-shirts on their holidays.
3)Forestry
Tells us about the rich biodiversity in our catchment areas, rainforests and other areas. Shows us the usefulness of different types of plants to our health, as food, fuelwood, chemicals etc.

And much, much more.
So if you think Geography is a dry subject, think again. Geography is really a huge world out there. If you feel bored start by tracing your way to your next destination. You will find geography very useful to you.
